The temperature method is a natural method used to detect ovulation because, contrary to popular belief, this is not always and for all at mid-cycle.
To measure the basal temperature needed to obtain a thermometer. you can use a specific pharmacy you buy, and a thermometer that has the notches further apart and thus is easier to read, or you can use a standard mercury thermometer or a digital thermometer.
You can start the measurement from the first day of menstruation or soon after the end of menstruation, giving data on a daily basis with the precision of the tenth grade
The basal temperature is measured in the morning after sleeping at least three hours in a row, preferably at the same time or at least up to a difference of half an hour more or less than usual time of measurement. If measure either the tb in a different time than usual, must indicate the time change on the graph.
You can measure:
Rectal is the best, most reliable and is recommended on books about natural methods.
Vaginal route is fairly reliable and more comfortable, the only problem is that it can be distorted by any vaginal infections.
Warning! TB taken orally is not trusted because it can happen at night to sleep with my mouth open.
The temperature trend is in a first phase (follicular phase) medium low until the time when down for a day, before recovering more than the average of the first part of the cycle in the luteal phase.
The fall and subsequent rise are that ovulation is confirmed after at least three days of high temperature.
The increase may not occur immediately after ovulation but also it can take 2-3 days.
The temperature then remains constantly high until a few days before the next period, when it comes down again. In some cases the temperature falls the day of your period or even the next day.
If your ovulation cycle is the graph will have a biphasic, ie the temperature is lower in the follicular phase and then rise to about 3 tenths of a degree in the luteal phase.

Graph to ovulation (biphasic)
Where the cycle is anovulatory, the temperature remains constant throughout the cycle, or it follows a roller coaster and you can not find in a biphasic chart.

In case of pregnancy, the average high temperature is also the day of the alleged arrival of menstruation and in some cases could be further increased by determining the so-called triphasic pattern of pregnancy.

The temperature can be influenced by several factors:
- Colds, fevers, flu;
- Use of drugs or hormones such as progesterone;
- Vaginal infections;
- Alcoholic beverages;
- Use a different thermometer in the same cycle;
- Measurement in different time.
